Get Food

Our Products

We source local, mostly Virginia grown foods and artisan products that are hand-raised or crafted. The furthest we travel regularly to farms and food producers is 168.27 miles to Bolar, VA for maple syrup and the closest is our back yard. Occasionally we venture out of state (NC kiwi in winter, butter beans in the summer, occasional sweet potatoes in the fall and from time to time we may get something from Maryland) but we do stay within our local food shed (BTW “local”, as defined by the USDA, is within 400 miles).

Our meats, dairy, poultry and eggs are hand-raised, pastured, raised without hormones or antibiotics.

We strive to source clean, affordable food.  This can be challenging in a climate plagued with curious weather, high humidity, and an overall shifting environmental situation that is creating superbugs, fungus, mold and other plant ailments. Luckily, we also live in an area where agriculture is booming and more and more farmers are producing food using clean methods.

Some people automatically assume that everything we sell we grow ourselves, or is USDA Certified Organic. We are developing an urban farm and each season are growing more food ourselves. For the most part, though, we work with other farmers to help sell the food that they grow.  Some of the fruits and veggies we source are USDA Certified Organic, but mostly we work with small farmers who use organic or natural methods but are not certified (farms generating less than $5,000 per year are not required to certify by the USDA), are Natural Certified, or are natural growers (using Natural Certified methods but not certified).

From time to time, despite our best efforts, please know that some produce we carry or ingredients in prepared foods we sell may be conventional and/or may possibly contain GMO ingredients due to price, ubiquity, availability or other fluctuations in the season. If we know for sure that items are this, we will have signage reflecting it, so you can make your own choice on whether or not you wish to eat it. We are working towards stricter standards for our growers and food makers to be all non-GMO, naturally grown produce. This is a work in progress. We are also working on providing information about our farmers and vendors in the market and on the bus and creating accurate signage to indicate the farm of origin and growing practices for each product (this is a big work in progress because of the constant cycle of seasonal food and new vendors, volunteers are always welcome to help!).

The market and the Farmbus are inspected on a regular basis by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and our vendors are inspected regularly and also spot inspected by their respective agencies.

If you have more questions about the food we sell, our farmers or vendors, please ask us.

We are always looking for someone to ride “shotgun” on our trips to the farms,  or help out on our USA drops, so if you are interested in learning about where our food comes from, come along for the day.
