About Farm to Family

Farm to Family is a year-round CSA and local farmer’s market serving Richmond, VA and Washington, DC. We function as a bridge from farm to city, distributing locally grown food to families in urban areas while educating people about food security and sustainability.

Mark Lilly founded Farm to Family in 2009, starting with a retrofitted school bus purchased from Craigslist that he transformed into a mobile farmer’s market called “The FarmBus.” Since then, our mission has evolved to include a Farmer’s Market in Richmond and a thriving CSA program serving both Richmond and Washington, DC.

What We Offer

At Farm to Family CSA, our members support each seasonal harvest by subscribing to a weekly or bi-weekly share of local produce and artisanal foods. We offer:

  • Seasonal fresh produce
  • Farm-fresh eggs
  • Artisanal bread
  • Farm-raised dairy products
  • Locally sourced meat and seafood
  • Grocery staples including:
    • Coffee and tea
    • Baked goods
    • Grains and pasta
    • Raw honey and molasses
    • Sauces, spices, and rubs
    • Jams and jellies
  • Flowers (NEW!)

All shares are available for pick-up or delivery in Richmond and Washington, DC.

Our Farming Practices

We source local, primarily Virginia-grown foods and artisan products that are hand-raised or crafted with care:

  • The closest source is our own urban farm, BusFarm
  • The furthest we travel is 168.27 miles to Bolar, VA for maple syrup
  • Our meats, dairy, poultry, and eggs are hand-raised, pastured, and produced without hormones or antibiotics
  • Our produce includes USDA Certified Organic, Certified Naturally Grown, and “organically minded” options (low-spray but uncertified)
  • Many of our farmers use bio-intensive, bio-dynamic, integrative pest management, and other natural methods

If you have questions about our food, farmers, or vendors, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Allergies & Dietary Restrictions

If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, please email us. We can accommodate common issues like gluten, dairy, peanuts, sesame, corn, vegan, and no pork/beef preferences. However, if you need to be extremely restrictive with produce (more than one or two vegetables or fruits), we may not be the right fit for you as we are unable to provide fully customized shares.
